3 Players the Browns Will Cut This Preseason Due to Surplus of Depth

The opening week of the 2019 NFL regular season is less than three weeks away, which means that a plethora of players around the league currently challenging for roster sports in the preseason will have to be sent packing, all on the same day.

The Cleveland Browns boast one of the league's deepest depth charts, and the organization's front office will have to do some tinkering before too long. These three players are the most likely to be cut by the franchise.

Most franchises around the league don't carry four tight ends, unless they have next to no faith in their current players at the position. That predicament just doesn't suit the Browns at the moment, as they already have David Njoku, Demetrius Harris, and Pharaoh Brown ahead of Carlson. The undrafted free agent out of Princeton might be forced to find a new home before too long.

2. CB Phillip Gaines

Gaines joined the Browns last year on waivers prior to Week 10 and appeared in four games for the team. After a strong draft in April, however, Cleveland now flaunts significant cornerback depth, a luxury they didn't necessarily have last year. The 28-year-old is predicted to be the sixth or seventh-string CB on this year's squad -- a reality that should ultimately result in him being shown the door.

The fact of the matter is that the Browns don't have room for a fourth gunslinger on their roster. Baker Mayfield, Drew Stanton, and Garrett Gilbert are the projected first, second, and third-stringers. Blough enjoyed a fairly successful career at Purdue, but will likely have to look elsewhere to have a genuine shot at getting snaps at the professional level. For once, Cleveland is NOT the ideal destination for a QB looking to make an unlikely run to a starting job.
