3 Players Chiefs Must Avoid Signing in Free Agency

The Kansas City Chiefs may have just begun their dynasty. Although they were dominant in 2019, no NFL team is free from flaws. If they want to get as close to a perfect roster as possible, they'll need to explore free agency. However, if they pick some of these players, it could come back to haunt them in the long run. These three free agents should be avoided by Brett Veach and Co.

3. Blake Martinez

The Chiefs need help at linebacker. They don't blitz often, and Reggie Ragland isn't great in pass coverage. Blake Martinez would look like a good fit as a more active LB with some ability to cover the pass, but looks can be deceiving. He had a career-low two passes defended last season, and he struggled against the run. What's more is that he's looking to get around $12 million dollars in 2020, and that's too much for what he does. He's very steady, but he's not a lights out player. The Chiefs can only afford to spend so much on new signings, and Martinez is far from a sure thing.

2. Jarran Reed

In 2018, Jarran Reed had 10.5 sacks. It was a breakout year for the young tackle. However, in the offseason, the police investigated a possible domestic violence case involving the 27 year old. No charges were brought forward, but the NFL suspended him for six weeks. In the 10 games he did participate in, he only recorded two sacks. One good season isn't enough to warrant a hefty payday and a spot on the best roster in the NFL, especially if off the field issues could potentially get in the way.

1. Robby Anderson

With Sammy Watkins likely leaving the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes is going to need a new target. Robby Anderson has been getting a lot of buzz lately after showcasing his talents on the Jets. With Tyreek Hill already on the team, another burner like Anderson could be interesting, but he's a one-trick pony asking for $12 million dollars per year. At that price tag, the Chiefs are better off investing elsewhere.
