3 Free Agents the Celtics Need to Avoid This Offseason

Depending on what moves they make this offseason, the Celtics will likely be very close to the luxury tax. They need to sign Jayson Tatum, and with existing contracts belonging to Kemba Walker, Gordon Hayward, and Jaylen Brown, it will be tough to make room for any big money signings. With that being said, the Celtics will need to make some moves in order to improve their depth this offseason, but they should stay away from these three players in free agency.

3. Dwight Howard

Despite having a career resurgence in Los Angeles this season, Dwight Howard is still too much of a liability in the locker room for a team like the Celtics. The Celtics have had locker room problems in recent years (Kyrie Irving), and have done everything they can to bring in players that are known to be good teammates and reinforce a pleasant locker room culture. Although Howard seems to offer exactly what the Celtics need (an athletic big man that can come off the bench and grab boards), he simply isn't worth the risk.

2. Aron Baynes

While Baynes was a fan favorite during his time in Boston, he isn't what the Celtics need anymore. Daniel Theis has blossomed into the perfect player for the current Celtics roster. As a whole, the NBA is becoming more and more athletic each year, and Baynes doesn't fit that mold. He would likely demand the type of money that a solid starter would make, coming off an excellent season for the Suns. While it would warm our hearts, it's just not realistic.

1. Marcus Morris

Much like Baynes, Celtics fans would love to see Marcus Morris return to Boston following another excellent season, averaging 17.4 points between the Knicks and the Clippers. However, he doesn't fit the Celtics at all anymore. The C's are stacked with scoring wings, and will likely give more minutes to players like Grant Williams and Romeo Langford next season off the bench. Morris will also likely want to be a starter next season, which isn't going to happen in Boston.
