The Dustin Pedroia injury saga has been a protracted one, to say the least. The veteran second baseman and former AL MVP's legacy in the annals of Red Sox lore is safely established, but what's not nearly as clear is whether he still has real, competitive baseball left in him after missing so much time to a litany of ailments.

For the time being, however, Boston fans can feel hopeful. The Laser Show is back in Pawtucket for a new rehab assignment in Triple-A.

Pedroia was supposed to play a Double-A game last weekend, but the knee injury he suffered at the beginning of the regular season flared up once again. He's had multiple procedures on the knee in recent years, but the organization considers him ready to chart a course back to the bigs.

In 20 at bats this season at the big league level, Pedroia has just 2 singles and 1 RBI. That stands in sharp contrast to infield phenom Michael Chavis, who has slashed .296/.406/.580 since being called up. If and when the 35-year-old veteran returns, he'll have his hands full fighting for playing time.

But in the big picture, the Sox just won't feel like the Sox without their iconic second baseman out there. And this weekend marks the latest meaningful step toward his long-awaited return.
