Somehow, the Los Angeles Lakers have managed to one-up their dysfunctional regular season with a truly inane series of misadventures this spring as they stay home watching the playoffs from their couches.
Within the last 24 hours, Adrian Wojnarowski has gone from reporting that Los Angeles was closing in on hiring Tyronn Lue as the franchise's new head coach to revealing that talks involving the former Cavs boss' seemingly imminent appointment is now off. Lue reportedly told the organization that he is withdrawing his name from consideration for the vacant position.
Insider Brad Turner also revealed that Rob Pelinka and the LA front office only offered Lue a three-year, $18 million contract even though the coach expressed his desire for a five-year deal given that he's got a championship ring to his name. Additionally, the Lakers brazenly attempted to take assistant coach appointments out of Lue's hands.
Forget the Suns, Knicks, and Cavaliers. The Lakers are officially the laughingstock of the National Basketball Association.
Lue and his representatives declined the Lakers offer of 3-years, $18 million. Lue was seeking five years. per source.— Brad Turner (@BA_Turner) May 8, 2019
How unstable and zany can your organization be if it can't even push Tyronn Lue, who was likely drooling at the opportunity to coach LeBron James again, over the finish line?
It's beyond nauseating. It's not even humorous anymore at this point.
The Lakers have decided to move on from Ty Lue as they search for their next head coach, having determined he isn't the right long-term fit for the organization, according to a team source.— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) May 8, 2019
So where does the franchise go from here? Do they turn to Jason Kidd, whom LA was reportedly interested in adding to Lue's staff as an assistant? It all boggles the mind severely.
We don't say this often, but we are truly at a loss for words. Congrats Rob Pelinka and Co. You've truly outdone yourselves this time.
