The Panthers entered the NFL Draft with a first-round grade on Will Grier. So, with him still somehow available at No. 100 overall, there was no chance they weren't going to take him.

Call it insurance for Cam Newton, who is coming off shoulder surgery, as Grier indeed is headed to Carolina.

Something tells me Carolina fans are going to love this pick. First off, the young man isn't expected to compete for the starting job right away. That's a given.

Newton is still only 29 years old and this is his team. However, Grier will head to the NFC South as a quality backup. Down the road, he could end up being this team's starter. And there aren't many quarterbacks better than Cam Newton for a young QB to learn from.

After a brilliant final two seasons at West Virginia, in which he threw 67 touchdowns, Grier can officially call himself a Panther.
