The hard decisions a coach has to make don't always strictly occur on the basketball court.
Rick Barnes is one of the more underrated coaches in basketball, or at least, he was. The current Tennessee Volunteers head coach has done such an excellent job turning his program around that he now has a difficult choice on his hands.
Barnes is reportedly torn between staying at Tennessee and accepting an offer of $5 million per year to become the next head coach of UCLA.
UCLA has offered Rick Barnes $5 million a year, and Tennessee has also come to the table with a new deal, sources tell ESPN. Barnes is wrestling with the decision. He loves living in Tennessee, but the chance to restore UCLA to its past glory is enticing. https://t.co/hYaGcVEubA— Chris Low (@ClowESPN) April 8, 2019
After they missed a shot at their biggest fish, UCLA made an offer to Barnes that is pretty hard to refuse.
You can see Barnes going either way with this one. Barnes apparently loves living in Tennessee and the fans. The head coach has led this team to new heights since he arrived in 2015. Tennessee won a share of the regular season conference title a year ago and spent time as the top ranked team in the country this season.
As much as he'd like to stay, Barnes does have a chance to restore one of the greatest basketball programs in history while making a ton of money.
A reported offer of $5 million per year for Rick Barnes. That's more than Tom Izzo. More than Bill Self. More than Roy Williams. https://t.co/GtZ7J9vJgm— Matt Young (@Chron_MattYoung) April 8, 2019
Barnes signed an extension with Tennessee that goes until 2023-2024 that paid him $3.25 million this season. His contract is expected to increase $100,000 per year but the Volunteers could change his deal around to keep him in town.
