On Friday, UNLV announced that the basketball program is parting ways with head coach Marvin Menzies after posting a 48-48 record in three seasons at the helm.

Early rumors indicated that former disgraced Louisville coach, Rick Pitino was being considered for the vacancy, but those rumors never really stood on firm ground and new reports suggest that Pitino will have to continue to wait on a potential reunion with the NCAA

Not only was Pitino never genuinely labeled as a potential hire, but it appears as though the Runnin' Rebels already have a replacement lined up as The Athletic's Aaron Torres considers former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta the clear-cut favorite to land the job.

Pitino will continue coaching in Greece and the question that remains is if there is a team out there willing to roll the dice on hiring the 66-year-old with the NCAA's investigation into Louisville still open.

There's no doubting that Rick is a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest basketball minds of all-time but UNLV is clearly set on heading in another, less controversial direction to turn to the program around.
