No you're not reading that number wrong. Go ahead and rub your eyes, it still won't change the absurd amount of money Earl Thomas is looking for in free agency.
Former Seahawks free safety Earl Thomas is definitely going to be one of the most sought after free agents this offseason, but new reports on how much money Thomas is looking for may scare off a number of teams.
I said “rumored to be” but can now confirm, at least in the market of 14M or more a year, per source. He wants to beat S Eric Berry’s number which is roughly 13M a year https://t.co/uj7ntUHI7L— Jane Slater (@SlaterNFL) March 11, 2019
It's unclear how much guaranteed money he's looking for, but considering Eric Berry got about half guaranteed on his contract, it makes sense to think Thomas will be looking for somewhere around $20 million.
Thomas is certainly one of the premier safeties in the NFL right now, having made the Pro Bowl six times and being named to All-Pro three times over the course of his nine years in the league. However, when considering he's turning 30 and coming off a major leg injury, it's hard to believe teams won't look for more cost-effective options.
Well, @RapSheet on NFL Network saying that the Cowboys are "by no means out" on Earl Thomas. So, the 49ers might have to win a bidding war.— Dylan DeSimone (@DylanADeSimone) March 10, 2019
With contenders out there looking for a veteran playmaker, don't be surprised if Thomas gets the deal he wants, especially Landon Collins signed for six years and $84 million with the Redskins.
