The writing was on the wall. Now, the worst fears about Salvador Perez's elbow will soon be reality.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, doctors have recommended that the All-Star Kansas City Royals catcher undergo Tommy John surgery, and he'll be undergoing the procedure in the coming days.
Breaking: Tommy John surgery has been recommended for Royals star catcher Salvador Perez. He is expected to have the surgery next week, and would be back for the 2020 season.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) March 2, 2019
This is one of the last things the Royals wanted to hear as Spring Training heats up. The market for catchers has all but dried up given that the regular season is right around the corner.
In 2018, Perez was named to his sixth straight All-Star Game. He additionally earned his fifth Gold Glove and second Silver Slugger honor. Having been with the team since his MLB debut in 2011, he's effectively the face of the Royals franchise, as well as a valuable component of their famous 2015 run to the World Series title.
It's a sad blow for KC, who now must keep tabs on the trade market in hopes of getting some help behind the plate. Best wishes to Perez, who will figure to bounce back in 2020
