However, Jon Heyman of Fancred has said the Washington Nationals shouldn't be "discounted" in re-signing Harper.
So, you're saying there's a chance?
While Phillies seem like favorite for Bryce (and may well be), incumbent Nats shouldn’t be discounted. While Nats have spent good $ (Corbin, Dozier, Suzuki, etc.) and once seemed ready to move on, they love BH, and final call will be Ted Lerner’s, who signed Scherzer in surprise.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) February 21, 2019
Heyman also mentions how much ownership loves Harper, and it wasn't that long ago when the Nationals came out of nowhere and surprised everyone when they signed ace starter Max Scherzer to a mega deal.
Washington has spent quite a bit of money this winter, including a massive six-year deal to left-handed starter Patrick Corbin. The Nationals also signed catcher Kurt Suzuki and second baseman Brian Dozier.
There are reports that the Nationals don't plan on offering Harper a Manny Machado-like deal, which would be a non-starter if you are Harper and his representation, as they are looking to get a bigger contract.
However, with the reputation that Nats owner Ted Lerner holds, Washington should not be counted out until he signs the dotted line somewhere else.
