We know the Philadelphia Phillies have been rumored to be nearing an agreement with Bryce Harper on a massive deal, but apparently he isn't even their first choice in free agency! And the Phils are on the same page as the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres.
It's hard to believe that was a serious sentence.
But such is life when the MLB decides to bore its fan two years in a row with a terrible free agency period. We're not sure in what universe that the Phillies, White Sox and Padres are the top teams in the mix for Manny Machado, but all of them reportedly prefer him at the moment.
#WhiteSox remain strong factor along with #Padres in Machado sweepstakes, sources tell The Athletic. Machado is said to be first choice of both front offices and preference of #Phillies’ front office as well, though ownerships in SD and PHI might not see it as convincingly.— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) February 19, 2019
Perhaps the Phillies-Bryce rumor isn't as substantiated as we thought? Or maybe Machado isn't giving Philly the time of day so the front office is moving forward with Bryce? Or maybe they're still trying to land both!
But if the White Sox and Padres remain a "strong factor," then it's safe to say we have no idea what's going on and that Machado landing in an unlikely destination is indeed likely.
To think we once thought Machado was going to be signing a contract shortly after the new year. Now, we're here speculating whether the basement-dwelling Padres are the frontrunners for the MLB All-Star.
