The New York Yankees just added to their bullpen with the addition of right-hander Adam Ottavino, and because they have a loaded pen, they might be adding one of those assets to a Sonny Gray trade.
According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees are "close to trading" Gray.
Yankees are indeed close to trading Sonny Gray. Teams are also asking about Tommy Kahnle and Jonathan Holder.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 17, 2019
A couple of the Yankee relievers are receiving interest in a potential Gray trade, including Tommy Kahnle and Jonathan Holder. This makes sense and the Yankees should oblige as they'll likely get a better return.
Plenty of teams have been connected to Gray this offseason, including the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A's, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners.
Yankees are working hard now on a trade for Sonny Gray. Appears to be getting more serious. Teams involved have included: reds, giants, brewers, a’s, padres, braves, mariners.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 17, 2019
Which team has the inside track is unknown, but Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been very forthright from the beginning that he was going to trade the former All-Star.
Gray is entering his final season before free agency, and he's already agreed to a $7.5 million salary for the 2019 season.
