Tate Martell swung and he missed.

After committing to an already-crowded quarterback room at Ohio State where he had to watch Dwayne Haskins set college football on fire and see Justin Fields transfer in, the former 5-star recruit has joined up with Manny Diaz at Miami.

Ryan Day better pray that Fields is granted eligibility immediately and won't have to sit out a year. If he has to wait, they're screwed for 2019.

Without Martell, Ohio State has three contenders for the QB1 job. Rising junior Kory Curtis is likely just there for depth. West Virginia transfer Chris Chugunov has experience at the FBS level, but struggled in limited action.

All signs point to redshirt freshman Matthew Baldwin. The 4-star recruit from Lake Travis HS in Texas has an accurate arm, can make some plays on the move and has the talent to be a solid starter at a school like Ohio State. Having said that, he isn't close to Fields.

Day needs a strong first season to assert himself in the Big Ten. With Baldwin under center instead of Fields, that will be noticeably more difficult.
