When the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots face off Sunday, history will have already been made before the first snap of the game.

Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to referee in an NFL playoff game.

Thomas is no stranger to breaking barriers, becoming the first full-time female official for the NFL in 2015.

In addition to Thomas' work on the field, another female official will be working a playoff game from behind the scenes. Terri Valentini will act as the replay official for the Indianapolis Colts-Kansas City Chiefs game Saturday.

Thomas has spent the last two seasons acting as a down judge after starting out as a line judge.

It's nice to see the NFL do something progressive (for once). Hopefully Thomas and Valentini will be the trailblazers for more future female NFL officials. Having them work during the playoffs could certainly help inspire other women who may want to pursue a career in NFL officiating.
