The writing was on the wall for head coach Todd Bowles way back in the summer following the April 2018 NFL draft. With the New York Jets going all in on what they hope will be their future franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold, the franchise needed to see a sign of forward progress after two straight losing seasons.

Instead, the organization again failed to surpass five wins, going 4-12 this season capped off by a typical beatdown at the hands of the New England Patriots in Week 17 by the score of 38-3. As a result, Bowles is now out in New York.

In four seasons, the dominant defensive coordinator has failed to get the Jets close to a postseason berth and has combined for a 24-40 record in 63 games overall.

Despite his struggles, the Jets were still able to sport a respectable defense until the second half of this year, when the unit completely collapsed despite the promising play of captain Jamal Adams.

With big names like Mike McCarthy and Bruce Arians—not to mention some college coaches up for consideration, like Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley—there should be no shortage in the pool of talent for the Jets to search through.

Let the search begin.
