The Toronto Blue Jays may be adding a star for 2019 without spending a single dime in free agency.
One of the most hyped prospects in recent memory -- Vlad Guerrero Jr. -- is expected to get his first taste of major league action in 2019, and according to projections, he's about to take the league by storm:
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s projection: .306/.368/.511with 4.7 WAR. this sounds insane yet so right at the same time. also, same amount of projected WAR as Nolan Arenado's! https://t.co/f95yhCCwSJ— Sung Min Kim (@sung_minkim) December 17, 2018
These projections may seem gaudy, but after looking at his numbers in 2018, they actually appear to be right on the money.
Last season, Guerrero Jr. split time across four levels of Toronto's system and slashed .381/.437/.636 with 20 home runs, 78 RBI and just 38 strikeouts in 408 plate appearances. Those are the numbers of a guy with serious star potential and he's expected to be the centerpiece of the Blue Jays' franchise moving forward.
In regards to his 19-year-old star in the making, new Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo had some words that should excite fans across baseball.
There was lots to talk about for new Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, but the one thing that kept coming up was his plans for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. pic.twitter.com/TGvUVNcRrP— Yahoo Sports Canada (@YahooCASports) December 12, 2018
He mentioned that Guerrero would probably hit at the top of the lineup for the club and could already be one of the best players in the game when he gets called up.
Vlad Jr. probably should have been called up last year, but I can't blame the Blue Jays for making sure that he was 100 percent ready for the biggest stage in baseball, and based off of his body of work, he'll have no problem grabbing the spotlight and being the player everyone believes he can be.
