Bears defensive tackle Akiem Hicks was forced to dole out a decent chunk of change today as he was fined heavily by the league office for making contact with an official and generally flipping out during last Sunday's game against the Bucs.
Hicks succeeded to hook up some fans up with a free jersey and shoulder pads as he tossed his equipment into the crowd following his ejection.
Fine news: #Bears DT Akiem Hicks, who was recently ejected for shoving an official then threw his jersey and shoulder pads into stands, was fined $33,425 for contact with an official.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 6, 2018
He deserved to get booted from the game, but isn't that fine a little bit heavy? Over $33,000 is nothing to sneeze at, even for a guy on a four-year, $48 million contract.
Hicks was clearly very frustrated after the play and the official got right up into him during the altercation. What did he think was going to happen?
What makes Hicks look bad here is not necessarily the act but the point in the game in which he committed it. By this time, his team was throttling Tampa Bay 35-3 and the game was pretty much over which makes you wonder why Hicks was so upset.
To put a silver lining on it, Hicks was able to avoid a suspension, and with a bye coming up this weekend, maybe it'll give him time to sit and think about his actions.
