This was supposed to be the year San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo made it to the big time. After showing signs of promise after coming over from the New England Patriots last fall, the expectations were suddenly there for a star turn in 2018.

Unfortunately, a decision to fight for additional yards along the sideline Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs instead of darting out of bounds may have ended his season. The Niners are fearing the worst about Jimmy G's knee, and Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston can only blame one man for the awful development.

“That was his fault. I pray he’s not hurt, nothing serious, but as a quarterback you should step out of bounds," Houston said after the game, which the Chiefs won 38-27.

"It was only an inch. That inch wouldn’t have made a difference. You got the yardage you need, you step out of bounds. You got to be smart.”

Ouch, the veteran pass-rusher came in with some seriously cold, hard facts of life right there.

It's not like Houston doesn't feel for Gucci Garopp. Nobody wants to see a fellow athlete lose a year to a devastating injury. But at the end of the day, he's right. Quarterbacks need to do their best to avoid unnecessary contact-- especially those on deals that include $74.1 million in guaranteed money.

Football is a violent, unforgiving game. Take a deep breath, Niners fans.
