For the fans out there who label Alex Smith as little more than a "game manager," I'd prefer to call him a good decision-maker. The guy just takes what the defense gives him and in his first game in a Washington Redskins jersey, he wasted no time capitalizing by finding a wide-open Chris Thompson for a simple 11-yard pitch-and-catch score.

It's not a play that would make highlight reels, but it was extremely effective nonetheless.

Rookie running back Derrius Guice will miss the entire season with a knee injury, which should open the door for Thompson to take on some increased backfield duties. With Smith favoring his pass-catching backs and tight ends, it should be a big year for Thompson if he can continue getting separation like he did here.
