Can you hear that? If you listen ever so closely, that sound is the collective sign of relief from every New York Islanders fan in the world.

John Tavares will now reportedly focus on negotiations with the Islanders as both parties look towards an extension. This rumor comes amidst rumors that Tavares would 'listen intently' to any offer made by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

This is about as good as any news the Islanders have received lately but it is wildly disappointing for the rest of NHL, as we're watching a carbon copy of the Steven Stamkos situation.

Tavares will be a free agent on July 1, so the sooner a contract is finalized, the better. With the draft approaching quickly, the Islanders will certainly look to upgrade both their defense and goaltending as long as they agree to an extension with Tavares.

The Islanders have already fired both their head coach, Doug Weight, and general manager, Garth Snow. They brought in Lou Lamoriello to be their President of Hockey Operations and general manager going forward, which reportedly pleased Tavares. Lamoriello is known to get what he wants in the NHL community, so it only makes sense he would go to the Islanders if he was sure that Tavares would re-sign.

Sounds like Lamoriello is ready to bring the Islanders back to success, but that's much easier said than done.

The 2018 offseason will be a telling one for the New York Islanders, but keeping their superstar captain would be a fantastic start. A contract could be agreed to very quickly so stay tuned for more updates.
