For the first time ever, the Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup champions! After trailing 3-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5, Devante Smith-Pelly equalized halfway through the third period, and Lars Eller delivered the final blow. And the rest is history.
The win marks the first major sports championship for the nation's capital since 1992.
This was truly a historic series, as both teams were playing in the Final for the first time. The Knights, of course, were in the midst of their expansion season, while the Capitals are into their fifth decade of competition in the NHL.
And in the end, Conn Smythe Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin and the Caps finally broke through.
