The Browns made perhaps the boldest move of the offseason by taking Baker Mayfield with the first pick of the NFL Draft.
By no means a surefire star in the NFL, Baker Mayfield will start his career backing up Tyrod Taylor. Hue Jackson has made that clear.
Hue: 'Tyrod is starter and that won't change' https://t.co/Q2quTIjXSP'— Rotoworld Football (@Rotoworld_FB) May 5, 2018
Good move by Jackson, letting Mayfield know that nothing will be given to him in this league. Taylor was a solid starting quarterback last year, even leading the sub-par Buffalo Bills to the playoffs. Leaning on him to transition to the reigning Heisman Trophy winner will allow Mayfield time to develop.
Additionally, Baker Mayfied has taken the news professionally. Rather than victimizing himself, Mayfield seems dedicated to working with Taylor as opposed to against him.
Baker Mayfield says QB competition with Tyrod Taylor won't create tension. #Sooners— Sooner Gridiron (@soonergridiron) May 5, 2018
"We're not going to be fighting over who's the man in the locker room. I'm a team-oriented guy, and we just want to win."https://t.co/tmfsNW4V05
Mayfield claims he just wants to win, and the Cleveland Browns would like nothing more. After going 1-31 over the last two years and missing the playoffs for 15 straight seasons, the Browns are desperate for some victories.
And it seems all but clear that it will be Taylor they turn to for wins in 2018, not the first overall pick of the draft.
