He just never quite figured it out.
Blake Barnett was a top QB recruit for Alabama just a few short years ago, but things didn't work out in Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban and Barnett didn't have a quality relationship, as Barnett's transfer to Arizona State caused each to take shots at one another.
Now, Barnett is transferring once again, as things at ASU have soured.
Barnett has two years of eligibility left, but the good news is that he'll go through the process as a graduate transfer. That means he'll be eligible immediately wherever he ends up.
Herm Edwards is now the coach of the Sun Devils, and it's safe to assume his plans for the program didn't include Barnett. That's all well and good, because now is the perfect time for Barnett to transfer, and he's already eyeing South Florida as a potential destination.
Maybe he just needs the right spot to put it all together. Keep in mind that it wasn't so long ago that he was a highly-touted high school prospect with Power Five programs fawning over him from coast to coast.
