After delaying officially naming his starters for the first three games of the NLDS against the Chicago Cubs while he waited to judge Max Scherzer's health, Dusty Baker finally has a Game 3 decision for us.
Stephen Strasburg will toe the mound in Game 1 Friday night, and as everyone feared, Max Scherzer will not start until Game 3 of the series at Wrigley Field. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez will start Game 2 on Saturday.
Dusty confirms what we suspected: Gio starts Game 2, Scherzer Game 3.— Chelsea Janes (@chelsea_janes) October 6, 2017
Scherzer left his final start of the regular season with a hamstring strain, something that has lingered in the latter part of the season. An MRI revealed a minor tweak so it doesn't seem to be too serious, but it was enough of a concern for Dusty Baker to move his postseason debut back another game.
The 33-year-old is a two-time Cy Young Award winner and in 31 starts this season he's 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA. Scherzer leads the National League in strikeouts (268) and WHIP (0.90).
