Tuesday isn't only Valentines Day, but Woody Hayes' birthday as well. In honor of one of the greatest coaches in College Football history, we're looking back at his best quotes about the state he hated most.
6. "I read your book, you SOB!"
Coach Hayes was never fond of his Michigan counterpart Bo Schembechler on the football field (they were friends off of it, if you can believe it). In fact, after one match-up in 1970, Hayes held up Schembechler's book and screamed "I read your book you SOB!" I don't think I have to explain to you what SOB stands for.
5. "All right, men, don't eat the salad. They're trying to poison us."
Coach Hayes was none too fond of eating room service on the road. One time the team was staying at a motel in Ann Arbor. Apparently they had some type of buffet, because coach Hayes told the players "All right, men, don't eat the salad. They're trying to poison us."
4. "I don't buy one drop of gas in the state of Michigan."
One day as the Buckeyes were on their way back from Ann Arbor, the team bus was running low on gas. When they asked Hayes if they should stop, he said "We do not pull in and fill up. And I'll tell you why we don't. It's because I don't buy one drop of gas in the state of Michigan. We'll coast and push this car to the Ohio line before I give this state a nickel of my money."
3. "They couldn't beat me with two Michigan coaches. So they had to come down here and take a coach that I trained."
Another classic about Schembechler. One day coach Hayes was asked about how Schembechler used to coach at Ohio State. The classic coach simply said, "They couldn't beat me with two Michigan coaches. So they had to come down here and take a coach that I trained. And they haven't beaten me with him yet."
2. "We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan"
This one is iconic. Few quotes incapsulate just how fierce this rivalry was when Hayes was coaching the Buckeyes. This one manages to though. When talking about his team one day, Hayes said, "We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan."
1. "Because I couldn't go for 3"
In one particular instance, Ohio State had a big lead over Michigan late in the game. Scoring a touchdown, Hayes had the Buckeyes line up and go for two, which they managed to convert. After the game, a reporter asked Hayes why he went for 2. His response? "Because I couldn't go for 3." Clearly the man had no love for Michigan.
