The tragic loss of Jose Fernandez is far from something that only effects the Major League Baseball community.
People all over the world are filled with grief over the unexpected death of the Miami Marlins' superstar pitcher--especially those who had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Fernandez, like his high school classmate and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Anthony Chickillo.
The two were standout athletes at Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa, Florida. Fernandez was "the baseball guy" and Chickillo was the "football guy," according to the NFL player, who's in his second season with the Steelers.
While talking to reporters, Chickillo referred to Sunday as "a really bad day." Fernandez's high school classmate added “He’s such a good guy, a family guy, a great friend. He’s going to be missed by a lot of people.”
"He always used to talk about how he was going to be what he became," Chickillo also shared. "He did what he said he was going to do. … He was one of the best in baseball. He was taking Miami over when I was in school there. I was so happy for him.”
Can't believe the news I'm waking up too, RIP Jose. I will never forget all the good times we had in high school, life is to short man!— Anthony Chickillo (@Chickillo71) September 25, 2016
Rest in Peace Jose Fernandez.
Gone way too soon.
