Dallas Cowboys fans must begin to look towards life after Jason Witten. Even though Witten has become a borderline family member for Cowboys faithful over the past 13 years, we all knew this party had to end sometime.
With Witten approaching the inevitable end of his career, Dallas may have his future replacement already on their roster.
Even though he's more used to dunking basketballs than catching footballs, Rico Gathers could be the next star tight end.
Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Julius Thomas, and Jimmy Graham were all college hoops stars who became NFL Pro Bowlers. Gathers could be next on that list.
It's impossible to ignore the physical gifts of Gathers. He's 6-6, runs a 4.75 40, can jump out of the building, and has the physical frame you look for in a tight end. He was a bruiser on the basketball court, and scouts believe that will transition into blocking.
Plus, his hands aren't too bad either.
Gathers has been working with wide receiver coach David Robinson, who has worked with big names like Emmanuel Sanders, Jordan Reed, and Laquon Treadwell. By working with Robinson on his route running, Gathers can hopefully transition from an extremely raw and gifted project, into a star tight end.
Adapting to the speed in the NFL will obviously be Gathers' biggest issue. He has not played organized football since he was 13, and now is playing at the biggest stage in the world. Gathers benefits from his current situation. He isn't expected to play right away, and will have the privilege of learning behind one of the best tight ends ever, Jason Witten.
Even though it will be a dark day in Dallas when Witten hangs up his cleats, that doesn't mean the future is dark.
Gathers has a bright future ahead of him in Dallas.
