The Patriots free agency is not getting off on the right foot.
New England has some key players up for grabs this offseason, as the likes of Malcolm Butler and Dion Lewis are already making plans to head elsewhere on the open market this offseason, and Nate Soldier is being heavily pursued as well.
Of course we knew that already, but this one is a much bigger surprise.
According to reports, Pats wide receiver Danny Amendola, who emerged as a favorite target for Tom Brady last season when Julian Edelman was injured, will be signing with the division rival Dolphins this week.
Danny Amendola is staying in the AFC East... expected to sign with Miami Dolphins per source.— Dan Hellie (@DanHellie) March 13, 2018
This may be surprising at first, but not when you think a bit deeper into it.
The reason Amendola played such a huge role for the Pats last season was because Edelman tore his ACL. With him back in the rotation, Amendola's role decreases, especially with Kenny Britt on the roster in 2018 as well.
Patriots have lots of questions with their WR depth. Cooks, Hogan, Britt and Dorsett are in contract years. Edelman and Mitchell are signed for the next two.— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) March 13, 2018
Amendola will now have the opportunity to play a much bigger role in Miami and slide into the No. 2 receiver role with Kenny Stills jumping up to the top spot. Not a bad role.
