It looks like the Honey Badger era could be over in Arizona.
How fast things can change.
Tyrann Mathieu, here at @NFLNetwork Thursday, said he and agent spoke with Cardinals Thursday. They asked him to take a pay cut.— Gregg Rosenthal (@greggrosenthal) March 8, 2018
According to Tyann Mathieu, he spoke with the Cardinals on Thursday. He was asked to take a pay cut.
A pay cut does not seem to be something Mathieu wants anything to do with. So that means one thing: it's time to move on.
Mathieu did not sound too amenable to a pay cut. Open to some type of restructure … “But taking money out of my pocket. I don't like how that feels.”— Gregg Rosenthal (@greggrosenthal) March 9, 2018
Mathieu is still one of the top safeties in football. He's also still very young at age 25. The Cardinals are looking to restructure his deal to clear some cap space. Perhaps this is to make a push for Kirk Cousins? They certainly need a quarterback.
Well, the full expectation around the league seems to be that Mathieu will be released at some point.
This was definitely something buzzing around the Combine. Teams are expecting Mathieu to get cut https://t.co/DsItnKcF2U— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) March 9, 2018
Mathieu is in the middle of a five year, $62.5 million deal. With a cap hit of a little over $14 million, the Cardinals seem to be ready to move on.
If he's cut, Mathieu will certainly be one of the top players available.
