Hey, maybe the Hot Stove season isn't so terrible after all! After a whole lot of beating around the bush, star free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer will be departing Kansas City for the San Diego Padres.
One of the gems of the free agent class, Hosmer was considered to be very much in the running for the richest contract of any player on the board. An All-Star, World Series champ, and four-time Gold Glove winner, Hosmer slashed .318/.385/.498 last season for the Royals and earned his first-ever Silver Slugger nod.
Per reports, that's more than good enough to earn him eight years. Eight!
If the early buzz is spot-on, Hosmer will become the highest-paid player in Padres history.
With a major position player now off the market, the hope is that the dominoes start falling and action can breed more action in this slow-as-molasses free agent season. We're looking at you, JD Martinez and Mike Moustakas! And Scott Boras! Ya bum!!
In the meantime, the Padres can smile ear to ear as they get things going at Spring Training. For the Royals, however, an uncertain future awaits-- Hosmer isn't the first free agent to leave KC this offseason, and he's not likely to be the last.
