Another member of Butch Jones' former staff in Knoxville is out, according to Volquest.
Tennessee running back's coach Robert Gillespie is reportedly leaving the program per his own choosing, despite initially staying on board when Jeremy Pruitt was hired in December.
BREAKING: Tennessee and running backs coach Robert Gillespie have parted ways. Jeremy Pruitt will begin a search for a new running backs coach immediately. pic.twitter.com/qhRGMycMwL— Volquest Staff (@Volquest_Rivals) February 13, 2018
This move comes as a relative surprise, as Gillespie was announced as part of the 2018 coaching staff just last week. The decision also comes shortly after signing day, and some signees will likely be caught off-guard based on the sudden nature of the move.
Gillespie had been with the Vols since 2013, and the split certainly hurts Tennessee in the short-term, as they try to fill the vacancy as quickly as possible.
Tennessee & RB’s coach Robert Gillespie decided to go separate ways after the recruiting season ended. Will be an interesting hire. 1st reported by Volquest— Trey Wallace (@TreyW_SEC) February 13, 2018
Tennessee faithful are thankful Gillespie stayed on through the recruiting period, as his absence could have greatly effected their 2018 class, which already took a hit after the coaching change.
