For those who thought the number would be off limits, guess again.
Gordon Hayward will be wearing his No. 20 as he puts on the Celtic green next season. Hayward was signed as a free agent a few weeks ago, and recently decided that he will keep his same number.
A number decision is not usually big news, but No. 20 in green was previously worn by another Celtic great who clearly is not getting his number retired. No, I am not talking about Dan Dickau in 2005-2006.
Ray Allen's number will NOT be retired. #Celtics confirm Gordon Hayward will wear No. 20.— Adam Kaufman (@AdamMKaufman) July 14, 2017
With Gordon Hayward deciding to wear number 20, it looks like Ray Allen will not be getting his number retired by the Celtics.
Allen played five seasons with the Celtics and helped them win an NBA title. Players have had their numbers retired for much less (Zach Randolph).
This would be more of a story if the Celtics were allowing Hayward to wear number 34 and not retire Paul Pierce's number. Still, Allen was successful with the Celtics, but maybe they are still upset about him leaving for the Heat in 2012.
