Watch this video carefully - it may be the closest we ever get to an actual pickoff attempt from Jon Lester for a long time.
With Lester on the mound for the Cubs, Maikel Franco was at the plate and Aaron Altherr was at first.
Altherr seemingly had enough of a jump to try the steal. Unfortunately for him, Lester never threw home, and he tossed it to the second baseman Baez for an easy out.
Does that count as a pickoff? If so, we basically just saw a shooting star!
Jon Lester picking someone off is a rare sight indeed. He goes literally full seasons between pickoff attempts. He does it so rarely that often when he actually does try, the throw sails wide.
Jon Lester just picked a guy off base. I think that's every bit as rare as Cubs' World Series wins.— Andy Garman (@GarmanSports) May 3, 2017
Maybe this is a whole new era for Jon Lester. The pick-off guy is back!
